Colors

Man, pancake batter can really take some color. I was pretty excited by the way the colors turned out in the Taco Platter (Dec. 13, 2009) and the Corn on the Cob (Feb 16, 2010) but they're pretty wimpy when you quit messing around and add some more food coloring. These look like foam rubber. The color did not mess up the taste.

One trick to keep the color from browning as you cook these: Keep the griddle a little cooler than normal and let the pancakes cook slowly.

I need to say thanks to Carl for coming over and taking the photos. My camera has died. Carl did that fancy out of focus thing on the Roy G. Biv pancake.

  1. pretty cool! how did you get the color wheel type design to be so perfectly round? Did you use a mold to cook them or are you just that awesome?

  2. Wow! Colorful :) My older daughter wrote and illustrated a cookbook. Her first recipe was "Orange Pancakes", with (inexplicably) big black seeds in them, like a watermelon. When I asked she explained with some impatience "Those are just for decoration, mom!" So I made some pancakes replacing the water with orange juice, adding food coloring and using chocolate chips as the "seeds". She was delighted with the results!

  3. The round part was a little bit of cheating. Rather than my regular griddle I used a small, round non-stick pan. That limited the spreadability of the batter.

  4. Have you heard about the colored bacon? With some green eggs, this would be a wild breakfast!
